Light pollution is a growing worldwide problem which affects vast areas of the earth. In a nutshell, Light Pollution is misdirected or misused light... generally resulting from an inappropriate application of outdoor lighting products. Sky Glow: light wastefully escaping into the night sky and causing a glow over urban/suburban areas.
Glare: light shining dangerously out into people's eyes as they walk or drive by.

Light Trespass: unwanted light shining onto a neighbor's property or into their home.
Why should I care?

Light pollution impacts us all... in many ways. Some of these are quite obvious, others are much less obvious. For starters....

Light pollution wastes billions of dollars annually in the United States. 5 to 10 billion depending on whose numbers you want to use.

Light pollution wastes incredible amounts of valuable natural resources. Hundreds of millions of barrels of oil... and hundreds of millions of tons of coal... just so people can light the bottoms of clouds?

Light pollution pollutes the air we breath through needless generation of electricity (most of which comes from fossil fuels). See the previous comment about burning oil & coal. Air pollution is a serious problem that affects large segments of the population.

Light pollution harms nocturnal wildlife. Many species won't even go near an area that has bad lighting. Also, many species will simply stop reproducing if habitat destruction from overly bright lights becomes too severe. Light Pollution currently threatens all Florida Sea Turtles.

Light pollution harms humankind, being linked to some serious ailments, including breast cancer. This is for real! This can be thought of as second hand smoke in the 1980's. Researchers were just starting to look into the effects of second hand smoke back then. Many people laughed at the idea that one person could smoke... and another person could be harmed. Today, we know that this is in fact the case.

Light pollution destroys the views of the heavens that man has enjoyed since the beginning of time. 90% of all American live under skies that are "affected" by light pollution... while roughly half can not see the Milky Way from their homes. This is a shame. Mankind has throughout history looked to the stars to try to understand events around them.

Benefits and Advantages of Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism is defined as the avoidance of food which is obtained by killing animals. Over the years vegetarianism has gained a growing number of followers. In my own native country of The Netherlands the percentage of vegetarians has increased from 1.9% of the total population in 1999 to 4.5% in 2005. What can be so attractive about the vegetarian diet?

Vegetarianism goes back a long way. History's first famous vegetarian was the Greek statesman, mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras (569-475 BC). He abolished the sacrificing of animals under his rule and was a fervent advocate of meat abstinence throughout his life. He is considered the founder of vegetarianism in Europe and even until the 19th century vegetarians were still called 'pythagoreans'. Pythagoras was a vegetarian on moral grounds primarily. He was deeply convinced that the killing of animals for personal consumption was an act of dire barbarism, leading to man's moral and spiritual decline.

In India Gandhi echoed Pythagoras' beliefs in his passionate claim that "the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Recently this utterance became the inspiration behind a new political party for animal rights in The Netherlands, who at the recent elections in November 2006 earned a surprising two seats in Parliament.

People become vegetarians for different reasons. Some choose the vegetarian way of life based on health related motives, others become vegetarians out of silent protest against the suffering and mistreatment of animals in slaughterhouses, while still others shun meat for spiritual reasons. The Buddhist's vegetarian diet is a logical consequence of the Buddha's doctrine of *ahimsa* or non-violence towards all sentient beings. Eating meat is seen as being part of the killing process and thus leads one away from the path to enlightenment. Fruits and vegetables are believed to stimulate mental and physical purity, while meat is said to cloud the mind and hinder one's meditation. Spiritual philosopher Sri Chinmoy explains, "When we eat meat and fish, the aggressive, animal consciousness enters into us. Our nerves become agitated; they become restless and aggressive, and this can interfere with our meditation."
Adversaries of vegetarianism often claim that a vegetarian diet misses out on essential nutrients, especially protein. However, this claim has never been backed by scientific evidence and is merely a widespread myth, as all essential nutrients are readily available from vegetarian sources, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, nuts and seeds.

More recently a contrary view has won wider public appeal, which argues that not shunning but eating meat poses considerable health risks. This view has been scientifically proven, as meat eaters tend to consume unwholesome fat and an excess of protein, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. To quote dr. William Castelli, Director of the Framingham Heart Study, "Vegetarians have the best diet. They have the lowest rates of coronary disease... Some people scoff at vegetarians, but they have a fraction of our heart attack rate and they have only 40 percent of our cancer rate." Elaborate studies in England and Germany have also shown this 40 percent ratio.

Finally, the vegetarian diet could prove to be a solution to the world's food problem. Roughly half of the world's corn crops are fed to cattle while every day an average of 40,000 children die of starvation. The same food that is now given to animals for meat production could put an end to world hunger. The environment would also benefit from the change in diet. Cattle farming uses up far more land, crops and energy than does agriculture. Large parts of the South-American rainforests are cleared to grow crops for cattle-fodder. The earth further suffers from the emission of nitrogen caused by animal manure, causing acid rain and the pollution of our drinking water.

The world's greatest mathematician, himself a devout vegetarian, sums it up beautifully:

Atomic Power and Its Impact

It was America which tested the atom bomb in the deserts of Mexico, but Otto Habur, a German scientist was the first to succeed in making the atom bomb by splitting the atom. For this he got the Nobel Prize for 1944 - 45. Later on, America dropped two atom bombs on Japan to bring the World War II to an end. The first was dropped on Hiroshima and the second on Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August 1945, respectively. Both the cities were ruined. America came out as the mightiest country of the world.

Now the atom bomb is the thing of the past. Hydrogen bomb which is made by fusion of hydrogen atom into helium is many times more powerful than the atom bomb. And in this series most destructive (powerful) is the neutron bomb.

Today, the world is sitting on a volcano. The fear of use of the bomb in war has started a mad race among all the nations, especially those who are rich, can invest huge amount on nuclear weapons. Dr. Einstein, the world famous scientist once said that the fourth war, at all it breaks out, will be fought with bricks and stones, because a third world war will bring everything in the world to ashes. Therefore, it is a challenge to mankind. Either man should put an end to war or war will end him.

The association of atomic power with destruction has all along raised the question whether atomic energy should be developed at all. After the incidents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, man has begun looking on atomic power with horror and suspicion.

His horror is certainly well founded. The superpowers like America, Russia, Germany, France, China etc. have stockpiled deadly atomic weapons in their arsenals. There is tension and suspicion, distrust and fear of each other. If a war starts between the nuclear powers, atomic or nuclear weapons may certainly be used and then mankind will witness a destruction of all the fruits of civilization and culture, all beautiful things which science has given for our comforts, well being, pleasures will be wiped out of existence. Instead of bustling of life there will be deadly silence of death. All those who love life, its beauty and goodness would like the atomic power to be brought to an end.

India has always opposed the use of atomic energy for the destruction of mankind. Though on May 18, 1974 history was made at Pokhran by exploding the first nuclear device. Then after a gap of 25 years, on May 11 and 13, 1999, India again tested successfully its nuclear power. This has led Pakistan also to test its nuclear power. It also successfully launched in May itself, though both are committed to the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes only.

Atomic power harnessed for peaceful purposes can bring enormous benefits to humanity. It can solve the energy problem. Nuclear power can be used for canal excavation, natural gas stimulation, underground mining, oil and extinguishing gas fires. Agricultural production can be increased manifold by making use of radioisotopes. Industrial production will go up. There will be no pollution due to smoke and fumes coming out of chimneys. A revolution can be brought about in the medical science. We know that radium rays are used for treating cancer and other diseases. Atomic energy can be used in place of conventional sources of energy in transport. This will make transport quicker cheaper and more comfortable.

Capitalism and Environment

The economic process involves and affects a large number of aspects. While classical economics is concerned mostly with the entrepreneur, other economists have emphasized other economic players (Karl Marx the worker, Thorstein Veblein the technocrat, John Stuart Mill and John Maynard Keynes the government). But there has not been nearly enough discussion of a very important, although passive, element in the economic process; and this oversight in economic theory has cost dearly to economic vibrancy and to the health of the world.

That element is nature.

In libertarian capitalism, property is described as nature converted into productive use. But no value is seen for nature. With a major input into the economic process, that is greatly affected by the economic process, and whose health has great effects on people's health, quality of life, and economic vibrancy, not being valued or quantified, the pricing system of capitalism fails to quantify a vast range of its effects. And this has resulted in the worst aspects of capitalism: The failure to disincentivize blind and destructive practices such as the burning of Amazon rainforest to make ranches that last for two years at the conclusion of which the land is desertified; and the failure to incentivize intelligent, ingenious, innovative practices that maximize utility to the consumer while minimizing destruction, pollution and waste.

While many people concerned for the well-being of the environment see capitalism itself as poison, I am not of the same opinion.Capitalism works correctly when both the inputs and outputs are rightfully priced. when economic activity fails to quantify what it destroys, pollutes and poisons - when for that reason it finds it profitable to destroy priceless treasures that man has not created and cannot conceivably recreate in order to realize minimal utility - the economic activity becomes destructive to a far greater extent than it becomes productive. And it is by quantifying these treasures for all that they have to offer people, as well as for what they intrinsically are, that can be disincentivized the myopia and destructiveness of an incompletely constituted capitalism while can be incentivized the ingenious and intelligent practices that actually create wealth.

When the Chinese government sought to quantify the health effects of economic activity throughout the nation, it had to suppress the survey, as it showed the health effects effectively bringing the economic growth in many regions to zero. The severity of health and environmental effects in places such as Linfen negates much of the growth achieved. Meanwhile there are plenty of effective and affordable smokestack and effluent filters on the market, and all it takes is quantifying the health and environmental effects and including them in the pricing to make it vastly profitable for the Chinese manufacturers to implement these filters and vastly reduce the damage of their economic activity to the health of the population.

The same is the case with economic system itself. Rainforest deforestation, ocean acidification, and global warming have only got as big as they did because nature has not been computed in economic process. And it is only by computing nature in economic process that capitalism stands to function as advertised, with incentivization for its benefits and disincentivization of its worst aspects.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Hybrid Cars


As car makers are increasingly thinking of producing hybrid vehicles, it's time to think if these cars are really going to be the cars of the future? However, 'hybrid' seems to be the latest advancement in the auto world. Hybrid cars are known to enhance mileage figures, and hence are believed to be better than the traditional cars. In this article, let's see if the hybrid technology is really worth the praise.

Hybrid cars come with dual engines: gasoline and electric powered engines. The gasoline motor does not directly power the car. Instead, it charges the electric engine which in turn runs the car. The first of its kind was made in a foreign land. In India, Honda was the first car maker to come up with the technology in its Honda Civic Hybrid.

Many other Indian auto majors have followed suit. Toyota, Tata Motors and Hyundai may soon come up with hybrid engines in their cars in India. With the introduction of the new technology, the international car market has witnessed a major change. However, the feedback has been both positive and negative making it difficult to judge if the introduction of many more hybrid automobiles is viable.

Let us first look at the advantages of hybrids:
• Compare the pollution levels caused by hybrids with that of petrol automobiles. You'll know in a jiffy that the emissions gushing out of petrol vehicles are way higher than their hybrid counterparts.
• Hybrids draw lesser tax than the gasoline-powered automobiles.
• Introduction of hybrids will also reduce dependency on oil which is a fast-depleting natural oil resource.
• Though expensive to buy, hybrids don't need fuel re-fills every now and then, thus saving the fuel expenditure.
• The mileage obtained is much better.
• There is no friction in the engine to damage the spare parts, and hence, no wearing out of these parts.
• Maintenance cost is considerably low.
• Regenerative braking in these vehicles serves as a generator and charger to charge the batteries.
• Tyres of hybrid cars are harder and more inflated as compared to conventional cars.
Time to have a look at the disadvantages of hybrid cars:
• These cars being expensive, arranging money for the initial purchase becomes difficult for the average man.
• Hybrid technology is fairly new and hasn't been tested well. Only time can tell what obstacles may occur while driving.
• Hybrids are lighter than conventional cars, hence making them more prone to accidents. In case of a collision with regular gasoline automobiles, hybrids and their occupants suffer greater damage.
• Heavy storms are capable of blowing off hybrids from the ground.
• Hybrids may be eco-friendly on the road, but produce twice the amount of pollution during the manufacturing process.
• The accelerative power is relatively low.
• Winters or cold weather can influence the working of batteries, thus hampering the hybrid's performance.
